Heatwave Horror: 143 Lives Lost, Over 41,000 Cases Reported in India
  • PublishedJune 21, 2024

Amidst scorching temperatures, India has recorded 143 deaths and 41,789 cases of heatstroke between March 1 and June 20, 2024, according to the latest updates from health ministry sources. The impact has been particularly severe in northern regions, prompting an advisory from Union Health Minister JP Nadda to state health departments for the ‘Heatwave Season 2024’.

The reported figures, though staggering, may not fully reflect the actual toll, as data collection remains incomplete in some states. Delhi alone has reported at least 53 deaths due to heat-related causes, with concerns that the actual number may be significantly higher. Uttar Pradesh leads with 37 reported deaths, followed by Bihar, Rajasthan, and Odisha.

The advisory stresses proactive measures, including enhanced hospital readiness, early warnings dissemination from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), and the provision of necessary medical supplies like ORS packs and intravenous fluids. It also mandates the maintenance of digital records for effective monitoring and response to heat-related illnesses.

Efforts are underway to mitigate the health impacts of the ongoing heatwave, with a focus on ensuring timely healthcare access and preventive measures across affected regions.
