Tension engulfed Aligarh’s Mamu Bhanja locality after a mob lynched Mohammed Farid alias Aurangzeb (35) on suspicion of attempted theft, police reported. The incident occurred around 10:15 pm on Tuesday, prompting heightened security measures in the area. Police registered a murder case and deployed additional forces to prevent clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups.
Six individuals were arrested following an FIR against 10 named and several unidentified persons, charged under IPC sections including murder and rioting. According to the FIR filed by the deceased’s brother, Farid was attacked by residents wielding weapons, allegedly targeting him due to his Muslim identity.
The incident sparked protests demanding justice for the deceased, while conflicting narratives emerged regarding the circumstances leading to Farid’s death. Authorities emphasized the need for a fair investigation amid differing accounts from witnesses and community leaders.
Aligarh SSP Sanjeev Suman engaged with community representatives to maintain calm, stressing adherence to legal procedures and condemning vigilantism. Politicians from different parties voiced concerns over the incident, urging a thorough inquiry to ensure justice and prevent communal tensions.
The deceased’s post-mortem was conducted, and his last rites were performed as authorities worked to manage the situation and address community grievances.
