US Congressional Delegation Meets Dalai Lama in Dharamshala Amid Tensions with China
Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other members of a bipartisan congressional delegation visited the Dalai Lama at his residence in McLeod Ganj, Himachal Pradesh. Led by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, the delegation discussed the impending signing of the Resolve Tibet Act by President Joe Biden.
The Resolve Tibet Act, recently passed by the US House of Representatives, urges Beijing to resume talks with Tibetan leaders to peacefully resolve governance disagreements and respect Tibetan cultural and religious identity. The bill challenges China’s historical claims over Tibet and calls for dialogue with the Dalai Lama.
Ahead of the meeting, Tibetan officials welcomed the US lawmakers, emphasizing international support for Tibet’s cause. In response, Beijing expressed strong objections, labeling the Dalai Lama as a separatist and urging the US to refrain from interactions that undermine China’s sovereignty.
The visit underscores ongoing international scrutiny of China’s policies in Tibet and the Dalai Lama’s efforts to seek diplomatic support for Tibetan autonomy.
