Heatwave Horror: 5 Dead, 12 Critical at Delhi Hospital; Labourers Most Affected
Five people have died and a dozen are in critical condition due to suspected heatstroke, according to Dr. Ajay Shukla, medical superintendent at Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital. Over the past two days, 22 patients, primarily labourers, have been hospitalized for heat-related illnesses.
Dr. Shukla highlighted that labourers are particularly vulnerable due to their prolonged exposure to extreme heat and delays in accessing medical care. The mortality rate for heatstroke patients is alarmingly high, between 60-70%, due to late treatment.
Since the heatwave began, RML Hospital has treated 45-50 patients for heatstroke, with seven fatalities reported. Additionally, media reports indicate that 10 more people have died from heatstroke in Noida within the last 24 hours.
Delhi is grappling with record high temperatures and a severe water crisis, exacerbating the risk for the labouring class. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert, advising residents to avoid extended outdoor activities.
The ongoing heatwave has sparked calls for a comprehensive heat action plan to address climate change and mitigate soaring temperatures.
