Kylian Mbappe sustained a significant nose injury following a violent collision with Austrian defender Kevin Danso during the Austria vs France EURO 2024 match. France secured a 1-0 win, but the victory was overshadowed by the injury to their star player.
The incident occurred during an aerial challenge when Mbappe’s head struck Danso’s shoulder, leaving the striker with a severely misshapen nose and profuse bleeding. Despite medical staff efforts, the bleeding could not be stopped, and Mbappe exited the pitch in the 90th minute.
France coach Didier Deschamps expressed concern, stating, “He has got a really bad nose. We’ll have to wait and see; the medical staff are dealing with it.”
The French Football Federation (FFF) later confirmed Mbappe had suffered a nose fracture. He will receive treatment and will not require immediate surgery. A custom mask will be made for him to facilitate his return to competition.
Mbappe addressed his fans on social media, humorously asking, “Any ideas for masks?” as he begins his recovery.
