A special Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft, carrying the mortal remains of 45 Indian victims of the devastating fire in Kuwait’s Mangaf, landed at Cochin International Airport on Friday. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh coordinated with Kuwaiti authorities to ensure swift repatriation and was onboard the aircraft.
The fire, caused by an electrical circuit, killed at least 49 migrant workers, including 45 Indians and three Filipinos. Kuwaiti authorities conducted DNA tests for identification. Most victims were from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.
In Kochi, arrangements were made for receiving and transporting the bodies to their respective states. Kerala’s DIG, Kochi Range, Putta Vimaladitya, confirmed coordination with victims’ families. NORKA unofficially reported that 24 Malayalees died, with 22 identified. Tamil Nadu confirmed seven victims, while Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh reported three each.
Prominent NRI businessman MA Yusuff Ali announced ₹5 lakh for each victim’s family, while Prime Minister Modi declared ₹2 lakh from the PM Relief Fund and directed government assistance.
The IAF aircraft will also land in Delhi to repatriate victims from northern states. Kuwaiti authorities have arrested several individuals on charges related to negligence in security measures. Additionally, Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Meshal announced financial assistance for the deceased’s families.
Kirti Vardhan Singh met with Kuwaiti ministers and visited hospitals where injured Indians are being treated. This tragic incident has prompted a thorough inspection campaign on illegal properties in Kuwait.
