IMD Warns of Prolonged Heatwave in Northwestern States, Heavy Rains in Northeast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Chandigarh for the next 4 to 5 days. According to the IMD, “Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue over northern parts of India during the next 4-5 days.”

In New Delhi, temperatures soared to 45-47°C, with Kanpur recording a high of 47.5°C. The heatwave is set to affect parts of Uttar Pradesh from June 13 to June 17, with severe conditions predicted for isolated pockets on June 16 and 17. Similarly, the Delhi-Haryana-Chandigarh region and parts of Punjab will continue to experience extreme heat during this period.

Meanwhile, northeastern states and West Bengal are bracing for heavy rainfall. The IMD’s forecast predicts that Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Northeast India will be lashed by heavy to extremely heavy rains over the next 4-5 days.

Recent heavy rains have already caused significant disruption. In West Bengal, the Teesta River swelled, leading to flooding in several areas. Northeastern states, particularly North Sikkim, have faced landslides and flooding, with at least one person killed and five others reported missing. Continuous rainfall on Wednesday night worsened conditions, inundating roads in Teesta Bazar and other areas.

Last week, Maharashtra and Goa experienced heavy rains, resulting in waterlogging and flooding in coastal regions. The IMD’s alert emphasizes the ongoing risk of extreme weather conditions across various parts of India, urging residents to take necessary precautions.
