England Secures Fastest Win in T20 World Cup History Against Oman
  • PublishedJune 14, 2024

England registered the biggest win in T20 World Cup history by defeating Oman at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on June 14. Led by captain Jos Buttler, England chased down Oman’s target of 48 runs in just 19 balls, marking the fastest victory in T20 World Cup history.

Winning the toss, England opted to bowl first. Oman struggled against England’s formidable bowling attack and were dismissed for a mere 47 runs in 13.2 overs. Shoaib Khan top-scored for Oman with 11 runs, while none of their other batters managed to reach double figures.

England’s bowlers were exceptional, with spinner Adil Rashid taking 4 wickets and Jofra Archer and Mark Wood each contributing 3 wickets. Oman’s batting collapse set the stage for England’s dominant performance.

In response, England chased the target with ease. Opener Phil Salt scored 12 runs off 3 balls, while Jos Buttler smashed a quickfire 24 runs from 8 balls. Jonny Bairstow added 8 runs, and Will Jacks scored 5 runs. Buttler’s explosive batting, including a sequence of boundaries — 4, 0, 4, 4, 6, 4 — off Bilal Khan’s over, propelled England to 50/2 in just 3.1 overs, sealing the historic win.

Bilal Khan and Kaleemullah each took one wicket for Oman, but their efforts were overshadowed by England’s dominant performance. This win, with 101 balls to spare, surpasses England’s previous record of a win with 70 balls to spare against the West Indies in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

With this victory, England’s net run rate surged to +3.081, keeping their hopes of reaching the Super 8 stage alive. To qualify, England must defeat Namibia in their final group match and hope for Australia to beat Scotland. Oman’s journey in the T20 World Cup has ended with this defeat.
