Devastating Fire in Kuwait’s Mangaf District Claims 41 Lives, Many Indians Feared Dead

A catastrophic fire erupted early Wednesday in a building housing workers in Kuwait’s southern Mangaf district, leading to the deaths of at least 41 people and hospitalizing 43 others. The blaze, which reportedly began in a kitchen on a lower floor, quickly engulfed the structure, trapping many residents inside.

According to multiple reports, the building housed approximately 195 laborers, including many from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The NBTC group, owned by Malayali businessman KG Abraham, owns the building. Onmanorama reported that five Keralites were among the deceased.

Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister confirmed the death toll, while Reuters highlighted the tragic loss of life. The Indian Embassy in Kuwait has established an emergency helpline (965-65505246) for those seeking updates and has assured full assistance to those affected. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed profound shock and extended condolences, noting that the Indian ambassador has visited the site.

Authorities have brought the fire under control and are investigating its cause. A senior police commander mentioned on state TV that overcrowding in worker accommodations is a recurring issue and may have exacerbated the tragedy. The building reportedly housed a large number of workers, many of whom were rescued, though many fatalities resulted from smoke inhalation.

The incident underscores the urgent need for improved safety regulations in worker housing to prevent such devastating occurrences in the future.
