Suspected militants ambushed the advance security convoy of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh en route to violence-stricken Jiribam district. The attack occurred in Kangpokpi district, resulting in one personnel sustaining injuries from multiple gunshots fired at the convoy. The shootout is ongoing near Kotlen village along National Highway-53.
CM Biren Singh, yet to arrive in Imphal from Delhi, intended to visit Jiribam to assess the situation firsthand, as reported by PTI. The incident follows Saturday’s violence in Jiribam, where suspected militants torched two police outposts, a forest beat office, and approximately 70 houses.
In the aftermath, around 600 individuals from the Jiribam area sought refuge in Assam’s Cachar district, ANI reported. The Cachar district police have intensified security measures along the bordering regions.
Meanwhile, Manipur Police disclosed that several houses belonging to both the Meitei and Kuki communities were set ablaze by unidentified perpetrators in Jiribam, following the murder of an individual. The attack underscores the escalating tensions and security challenges in the region.
