Mamata Banerjee Questions Legitimacy of NDA Government, TMC in “Wait and Watch” Mode
  • PublishedJune 8, 2024

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed doubts about the longevity of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, calling it “unconstitutional” and “illegal.” After a strategy meeting with senior TMC leaders and newly elected MPs, Banerjee suggested the opposition INDIA bloc might claim to form the government in the future.

Banerjee criticized the mandate, stating, “This mandate was against Narendra Modi, so he should not become the prime minister this time.” She announced TMC’s decision to boycott the new government’s swearing-in ceremony and emphasized their demand in Parliament to revoke the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Despite BJP’s reduced strength in the Lok Sabha, TMC celebrated a strong electoral performance, securing 29 of 42 seats in West Bengal. Sudip Bandopadhyay was re-elected as Leader of the party in the Lok Sabha, with Derek O’Brien continuing as Leader in the Rajya Sabha. Banerjee congratulated the victorious candidates, highlighting the party’s resilience and dominance in the state.
