Following the announcement of Lok Sabha election results, discussions are now in full swing for Narendra Modi’s anticipated third term as Prime Minister of India. The newly elected members of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are slated to convene today to elect Modi as their leader, paving the way for his oath-taking ceremony.
After Modi’s election as the NDA leader, key members of the alliance, including Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu, are expected to accompany him in meeting the President to present the list of supporting MPs and stake claim to form the government.
Senior BJP leaders, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and J P Nadda, have been engaged in discussions with allies to determine their share of representation in the new government, crucial for its stability.
Modi, having submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, is poised to assume office for a third consecutive term, tentatively scheduled for Sunday, pending assurances of support from coalition partners. Wednesday witnessed intense negotiations between the Congress-led INDIA alliance and the BJP-led NDA, with neither party securing a sole mandate to form the government.
In the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured 240 seats, down from its 2019 tally, while the Congress made significant gains with 99 seats. The NDA clinched 293 seats, while the INDIA bloc crossed the 230 mark, presenting stiff competition and defying earlier predictions.
As Modi’s leadership comes under scrutiny, with Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi questioning his future as Prime Minister, Modi himself emphasized unity and cautioned against misinformation during the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting. He pledged to fulfill the expectations of the people and reiterated his commitment to the nation’s progress.
