In a surprising turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is struggling to secure a majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, despite predictions of a landslide victory. The BJP’s biggest setback has come from Uttar Pradesh (UP), where it faces a significant challenge from the opposition INDIA bloc. The Samajwadi Party leads in 35 out of 80 seats, and Congress in seven, leaving BJP with just 34 seats in the state, marking a dramatic shift from previous elections.
Nationally, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is poised to retain power for a third consecutive term but falls short of the overwhelming majority forecasted by exit polls. In Rajasthan and Haryana, where the BJP dominated in the last elections, it is now facing stiff competition from Congress and its allies.
The INDIA bloc, comprising Congress, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and other regional parties, is performing strongly, especially in key Hindi heartland states. In Rajasthan, Congress is leading in eight seats, and other allies are also securing additional seats. Bihar sees the RJD, Congress, and CPI(ML) reducing BJP’s dominance. In Haryana, Congress and BJP are neck and neck, each leading in five seats. Jharkhand is also witnessing gains for Congress and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), leading in five seats collectively.
However, the NDA maintains its stronghold in Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, and Chhattisgarh. BJP leads in all 29 seats in Madhya Pradesh, all four in Himachal Pradesh, all seven in Delhi, and all five in Uttarakhand. In Chhattisgarh, BJP is ahead in 10 seats, with Congress leading in one.
