Severe Heatwave in Punjab to Ease Starting May 31, IMD Forecasts Relief
  • PublishedMay 30, 2024

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Wednesday that the severe heatwave, prevailing over Punjab since May 16, is expected to gradually diminish starting May 30. Director of IMD, Chandigarh, AK Singh, mentioned that there would be relief from the intense heatwave from May 31, with the maximum temperature dropping by 3-4 degrees Celsius in Punjab. Isolated light rainfall is forecasted in some parts of the state from May 31, under the influence of western disturbances.

Singh highlighted that thunderstorms and lightning are expected in some areas, contributing to the decrease in temperature. However, he assured that there is no red alert warning for severe heatwave until June 2 in Punjab.

Although there was a slight rise in both maximum and minimum temperatures on Wednesday, with Bathinda recording a scorching maximum temperature of 48.5 degrees Celsius, relief is on the horizon. The IMD reported that the average maximum temperature in Punjab on Wednesday was significantly above normal, while the minimum temperature was also higher than usual.

According to IMD officials, by June 1, most parts of the state will experience relief from the heatwave conditions. However, warmer nights are anticipated to persist in many districts, with no significant drop in minimum temperatures expected.

The forecast offers hope for residents of Punjab as they brace for relief from the oppressive heatwave conditions that have gripped the region for weeks.
