Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of Punjab’s AAP government has revealed a groundbreaking initiative aimed at ensuring canal water supply to every agricultural field in the state. This ambitious plan is projected to result in significant savings of ₹6,000-7,000 crore from the electricity subsidy previously allocated for free power supply to the farm sector.
Highlighting his government’s achievements, Mann emphasized the provision of essential amenities such as free electricity (up to 300 units), creation of government job opportunities, and the establishment of Aam Aadmi Clinics.
Moreover, Mann reiterated his commitment to fulfilling electoral promises by announcing an increase in the monthly honorarium for women from ₹1,000 to ₹1,100. Despite the delay in implementing the scheme pledged during the 2022 assembly polls, the government remains dedicated to delivering on its commitments.
The increased honorarium for women will be funded through the savings generated by reducing the dependence on tubewell irrigation, a move expected to render around five to six lakh tubewells redundant. By significantly expanding access to canal water for irrigation, the government aims to surpass the previous 21% coverage to over 60% of fields in Punjab.
With a focus on effective resource allocation, Mann reassured that only ₹5,500 crore would be utilized for the increased honorarium, demonstrating prudent financial management while prioritizing the welfare of women in the state.
