Pride of Lions Hunts Cow in Gujarat Village, Scaring Locals
A 15-second video showing a pride of lions preying on a cow along a road in Gujarat’s Amreli has gone viral on social media. The clip, reportedly shot by villagers, captures four lions hunting the cow late Sunday night. Villagers gathered to watch the lions and informed forest department officials. However, the lions fled into the Sinho forest, frightened by the villagers’ torch lights, before officials arrived.
Farmer Rupesh Mordia described the incident, stating, “When we were going ahead of Dhari village, we saw a group of lions moving on the road. In no time, the lions went inside the village and hunted the cow.”
This is not an isolated event; videos of lions straying into residential areas and preying on domesticated cattle near Gir are increasingly common. In another recent incident, a lion was filmed sitting in the middle of the road in Amreli’s Chalala, unbothered by an approaching vehicle.
Earlier this month, a pride of 14 lions was spotted crossing a highway in Gujarat’s Amreli. The footage was captured by a tourist.
Gujarat is home to the world’s last population of Asiatic lions, primarily residing in the Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. The lions now range across nine districts in the state, covering approximately 30,000 square kilometers, known as the Asiatic Lion Landscape.
