Punjab and Haryana continue to endure scorching temperatures as a blistering heatwave sweeps across the region, with Sirsa and Bathinda hitting a sweltering 48.4°C, marking the hottest day of the season. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts severe heatwave conditions to persist until May 30, prompting concerns about the health and safety of residents.
The IMD has issued a red alert for the heatwave until May 29, with an orange alert thereafter, signaling the intensity of the heatwave. According to IMD officials, Punjab’s maximum temperatures have soared significantly above normal, with nights becoming warmer due to a continuous rise in the average minimum temperature.
In response to the extreme weather conditions, the Haryana government has taken proactive measures by advancing summer vacations in both state-run and private schools. Schools will now remain closed from May 28 to June 30, a decision made to ensure the well-being of students and staff amid the oppressive heat.
Additionally, health authorities have been placed on high alert to address potential heatstroke cases, with government hospitals conducting mock drills to manage heat-related emergencies effectively. Health advisories are being disseminated regularly to educate the public on staying safe during the heatwave.
As temperatures continue to soar, residents are urged to take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses and stay hydrated. The severe heatwave underscores the importance of proactive measures to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events on public health and safety.
