Punjab witnessed a significant surge in power consumption, with a staggering 28% increase compared to the same period last year. The surge comes amidst an extended severe heatwave alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) until May 28.
According to reports, Punjab’s power consumption reached 5,563 million units (MU) by May 25, compared to 4,349 MU during the corresponding period last year. On May 25 alone, within 24 hours, the power demand surged by 68%, reaching 258 MU, as opposed to 154 MU on the same day last year.
Despite the substantial increase in power consumption, no power cuts were enforced in the state, as confirmed by a senior official of the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL).
In addition to increased consumption, Punjab also experienced a surge in maximum power demand, which rose by over 50% compared to the previous year. Currently, the maximum power demand in Punjab has been consistently around 14,000 Mega Watt (MW) since May 20.
The situation is exacerbated by soaring temperatures across the state, with Faridkot recording a scorching maximum temperature of 47.4°C on Sunday. The IMD has labeled the prevailing heatwave in Punjab as ‘abnormal,’ extending the heatwave alert until May 28.
With temperatures rising significantly above average, Punjab faces challenging conditions as it grapples with the dual challenges of heightened power consumption and extreme heat.
