Bahujan Samaj Party’s Influence in Punjab Elections: A Potential Spoiler for Mainstream Parties
  • PublishedMay 25, 2024

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), once a prominent force in Punjab’s political landscape, may play a spoiler role in at least three constituencies – Anandpur Sahib, Jalandhar, and Hoshiarpur. Historically, the BSP enjoyed significant support in Punjab, particularly among Dalit communities, but its influence has waned over the years.

However, the BSP’s presence remains noteworthy, especially in regions dominated by the Ravidassia community, such as the Doaba region. In Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur, both reserved for scheduled castes, and Anandpur Sahib, the BSP’s candidates are closely watched due to their potential to disrupt electoral equations.

Despite its shrinking base, the BSP retains pockets of support, particularly in areas like Phagwara, Sham Chaurasi, and Chabbewal. In past elections, the BSP garnered substantial votes, impacting the electoral outcomes. Notably, the BSP’s performance could affect the prospects of major political players, including the Congress, BJP, and AAP.

While the BSP’s influence has declined since its heyday in the 1990s, its role as a potential spoiler underscores the complexity of Punjab’s political landscape. As Punjab heads into elections, the BSP’s performance in key constituencies remains a subject of keen observation and speculation.
