Taiwan on High Alert Amid Chinese Military Exercises
Taiwan scrambled jets and put missile, naval, and land units on alert Thursday as China conducted military exercises around the island following the inauguration of Taiwan’s new president. Beijing claims Taiwan as its territory and conducts frequent military operations to intimidate its people and degrade its defenses.
Taiwan’s Defence Ministry condemned the exercises, stating they jeopardize regional peace and stability. President Lai Ching-te called for an end to Beijing’s military intimidation and pledged to avoid provoking conflict while maintaining dialogue.
China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) stated the exercises are a response to separatist forces and a warning to external interference. The exercises test PLA’s joint strike capabilities and cover areas around Taiwan, including Matsu and Kinmen.
US Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Stephen Sklenka urged Asia-Pacific nations to condemn China’s actions, emphasizing the need for regional solidarity. Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa also highlighted the importance of a peaceful Taiwan Strait, stressing Taiwan’s shared values with Japan.
