Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Punjab to kick off his election campaign, heavy security measures have been put in place across the state. Thousands of police personnel and three companies of paramilitary forces have been stationed at various points, particularly in cities like Patiala, Jalandhar, and Gurdaspur, where Modi is expected to campaign for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates.
The security arrangements come in response to a call by farmer unions, including the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), to protest against Modi’s visit. The heightened security follows a continued deadlock between the Centre and agriculturists over various demands.
In Patiala, the entire district has been declared a no-flying zone, with heavy vehicles diverted and strict screening measures in place to prevent farmers from reaching the rally venue. Similarly, in Jalandhar, nearly 4,000 police personnel and paramilitary forces have been deployed to maintain security.
Despite the security measures, farmer leaders have expressed their intention to protest peacefully, with plans to show black flags to Modi during his visit. The situation remains tense as both sides prepare for potential demonstrations and rallies.
