Albanese Government Backs ICC’s Role Amid Controversy Over Arrest Warrants for Netanyahu and Hamas Leaders
  • PublishedMay 21, 2024

The Albanese government respects the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) role in upholding international law after its chief prosecutor requested arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas officials, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for war crimes and crimes against humanity. While a spokesperson for Foreign Affairs stated it was inappropriate to comment on court matters, they emphasized that Israel must adhere to international laws.

Labor minister Chris Bowen reiterated that international law must be observed by all, without exception. Opposition leader Peter Dutton criticized the government for not supporting US President Joe Biden’s rejection of claims that Israel is committing genocide, calling the ICC’s actions an “abomination.” Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison also condemned the ICC’s decision. In contrast, Greens leader Adam Bandt supported the warrants, seeing them as a step towards accountability. The ICC’s decision remains pending, as Israel is not a member of the court, but warrants could risk Israeli officials’ arrest abroad.
