Saudi King Salman Undergoes Medical Tests for Lung Inflammation
  • PublishedMay 20, 2024

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Bin Abdulaziz is suffering from lung inflammation and will be treated with antibiotics at Al Salam Palace in Jeddah, as reported by the state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA). The 88-year-old monarch experienced a high fever and joint pain and subsequently underwent medical tests at the Royal Clinics at Al Salam Palace.

In April, King Salman was admitted to the hospital for a routine checkup but was released shortly afterward. He has led the world’s largest oil exporter since 2015, with his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), managing most of the kingdom’s daily affairs.

Crown Prince Mohammed was expected to travel to Japan this week for a rare trip outside the Middle East, where he was scheduled to meet Prime Minister Fumio Kishida from May 20 to May 23. However, his travel plans may be impacted by the current situation.

MBS recently met with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan to discuss the Gaza conflict and finalize strategic agreements between Saudi Arabia and the US. These agreements could provide Saudi Arabia with security guarantees and outline a potential pathway to diplomatic relations with Israel.

Additionally, Prince Mohammed met with regional leaders, including Jordan’s King Abdullah II, during the 33rd Arab Summit in Bahrain.
