Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sadness over the tragic demise of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, highlighting Raisi’s significant role in strengthening the bilateral relationship between India and Iran. Modi conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Raisi’s family and the people of Iran.

Raisi was found dead a day after his helicopter went missing, reportedly due to a crash in Iran’s mountainous region. Alongside Raisi, Iran’s foreign minister, officials, and bodyguards also perished in the tragic incident.

State television and news agencies confirmed Raisi’s death, stating that he had achieved the highest level of martyrdom in serving the Iranian nation.

The crash, which occurred in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, claimed the lives of nine people, including Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. Reports indicated that there were no survivors among the passengers.

Raisi had been visiting the northwestern province to inaugurate a dam project with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev in Jolfa. As a staunch conservative, Raisi was expected to succeed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

During his presidency, Iran witnessed widespread civil protests following the death of Iranian-Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini. Raisi’s final speech reiterated his support for Gaza amid ongoing attacks from Israel.
