Mismatched Food Combinations: Ayurvedic Insights for Better Digestion and Health

According to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, mixing certain foods together can disrupt digestion and lead to health issues. Nutritionist and Yoga teacher Juhi Kapoor highlights seven common wrong food combinations that may negatively impact health.

Ayurveda advises against combining fruit with milk due to potential digestive problems. This combination can cause fermentation in the stomach, leading to bloating and discomfort. Although both nutritious individually, combining spinach (palak) and paneer (Indian cheese) may not be ideal. The calcium in paneer can hinder the absorption of iron from spinach, reducing overall nutritional benefits.

Heating honey can diminish its beneficial enzymes and antioxidants, while mixing it with hot water may create harmful compounds, according to Ayurveda. It’s recommended to consume honey in lukewarm or room temperature water. Pairing calcium-rich milk with iron-rich dates may hinder iron absorption, as calcium can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb iron.

Mixing hot and cold foods can disrupt digestion, leading to bloating and discomfort. Consuming ice cream with hot Gulab Jamun may exacerbate digestive issues. Tea contains antinutrients like tannin and caffeine, which can hinder the absorption of iron and calcium in the body. Avoid drinking tea with meals to optimize nutrient absorption.

According to Ayurveda, combining milk and fish is considered incompatible and may lead to indigestion and toxin buildup in the body. By being mindful of these food combinations, individuals can support better digestion and overall health according to Ayurvedic principles.
