Supreme Court to Decide on Arvind Kejriwal’s Interim Bail Amidst Money Laundering Probe

The Supreme Court is set to deliver its verdict on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s interim bail plea today. Kejriwal, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with a money laundering investigation related to the Delhi liquor policy case, seeks temporary release to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections.

During proceedings, the court expressed concerns over Kejriwal’s dual role as a chief minister and a political candidate, suggesting he abstain from matters pertaining to the Delhi excise policy if granted bail. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the ED, contested the notion of special treatment for Kejriwal due to his position, emphasizing equality before the law.

The ED, in its affidavit, accused Kejriwal of enjoying luxuries like a stay at a 7-star hotel in Goa, allegedly funded by individuals involved in AAP’s election campaign. Kejriwal’s legal team criticized the ED’s filing, alleging procedural irregularities.

The case stems from allegations that AAP leaders, including Kejriwal, accepted kickbacks for a favorable liquor policy, later scrapped on the recommendation of the Delhi LG, VK Saxena, leading to a CBI probe.

Kejriwal’s arrest followed his non-cooperation with the ED’s investigation, leading to his judicial custody in Tihar Jail. The SC’s decision holds significance amid the ongoing legal battle and the upcoming elections, with implications for both Kejriwal’s political future and the precedence of law enforcement actions against public officials.
