India and Maldives Discuss President Muizzu’s Potential Visit to New Delhi

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer in New Delhi, discussing the possibility of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India “very soon.” The diplomatic talks aimed to mend strained ties between the two nations.

Zameer clarified that President Muizzu’s decision to visit China after his election win was due to convenience, as discussions with New Delhi had previously been held regarding a visit to India. However, Zameer emphasized ongoing discussions with Jaishankar regarding Muizzu’s imminent visit to Delhi.

Regarding derogatory remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Zameer assured that the Maldivian government is ensuring such incidents do not recur. He also denied any military pact with China, affirming that foreign militaries would not be stationed in the Maldives.

Debt relief measures for Maldives and economic cooperation with India were also discussed during the meeting. Zameer reiterated the Maldivian government’s stance against derogatory remarks, emphasizing actions taken to prevent their recurrence.

The discussions underscored efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and foster mutual understanding between India and the Maldives.
