Sonakshi Sinha has opened up about her role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series “Heeramandi,” particularly addressing the bold same-sex foreplay scene involving her character Fareedan. In an interview with News18, Sinha revealed that the exploration of Fareedan’s sexuality was intentionally left open-ended.
The scene in question depicts Fareedan engaging in foreplay with one of her maids, hinting at a sexual relationship between them. However, Bhansali chose not to delve deeper into this aspect of the character.
Explaining the decision, Sinha suggested that Fareedan’s troubled past, having been sold off at a young age, may have influenced her aversion to men. This complexity was intentionally left unexplored beyond the single scene.
Despite the limited exploration of Fareedan’s sexuality, Sinha expressed gratitude for the positive feedback the series has received, particularly highlighting the praise she received from veteran actor Rekha. Sinha described Rekha’s appreciation as a memorable moment in her career, emphasizing the love and support shared between them.
“Heeramandi” marks Bhansali’s debut in the OTT world and delves into the lives of courtesans in pre-independence India, exploring themes of love and betrayal against the backdrop of the Indian freedom struggle. The series features a star-studded cast including Manisha Koirala, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, and others, and was released on Netflix on May 1.
