Voting for 88 constituencies in the second phase of the 18th Lok Sabha elections across 13 states and union territories commenced today, with over 1,200 candidates vying for victory. By 3 pm, a voter turnout of 50.3% was reported across the participating regions. Notably, Manipur, Chhattisgarh, Bengal, Assam, and Tripura recorded over 53% turnout, while Maharashtra registered the lowest at over 31%, a significant increase from the 2019 figures.

Tomorrow, all 20 seats in Kerala, 14 in Karnataka, 13 in Rajasthan, 8 each in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, 7 in Madhya Pradesh, 5 each in Assam and Bihar, 3 each in Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, and 1 each in Manipur, Tripura, and Jammu and Kashmir will go to polls.

The second phase features prominent contenders such as Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, BJP’s Tejasvi Surya, Hema Malini, and Arun Govil, along with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor. Additionally, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s brother DK Suresh and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy are contesting.

In the 2019 elections, the NDA clinched victory in 56 of the 89 seats, while the UPA secured 24. Redrawn boundaries due to the delimitation exercise affected six of these seats.

With the first phase witnessing a turnout of approximately 65.5%, the ongoing elections are poised to shape the nation’s political landscape significantly.
