Vidya Balan: Kerala’s Acceptance Contrasts Bollywood’s Approach to LGBTQ Representation
  • PublishedApril 25, 2024

In a candid discussion on the podcast Unfiltered with Samdish, actress Vidya Balan highlighted the stark contrast between Kerala’s more accepting audience and Bollywood’s reluctance regarding LGBTQ representation. Reflecting on Malayalam superstar Mammootty’s portrayal of a gay character in Jeo Baby’s “Kaathal: The Core,” Balan expressed skepticism about leading Hindi stars, particularly the Khans, taking on similar roles.

Balan acknowledged Kerala’s more literate audience, attributing Mammootty’s portrayal to the societal fabric of the region. She emphasized the reverence for actors in South India and praised Mammootty’s secure approach to the role, contrasting it with potential concerns about machismo in Bollywood.

Despite her doubts about established Hindi stars, Balan expressed hope in the new generation, citing Ayushmann Khurrana’s role in “Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan” as a positive step towards breaking stereotypes.

“Kaathal: The Core,” directed by Jeo Baby and starring Mammootty and Jyothika, explores themes of acceptance and identity within a marriage. Balan commended Mammootty’s dual role as actor and producer, noting the significance of his support for the LGBTQ community.

As Balan’s remarks highlight, while Kerala’s cinema celebrates progressive narratives, Bollywood still has ground to cover in embracing diverse representations.
