India Dismisses US Human Rights Report as “Deeply Biased”
In response to the recently released Human Rights Report by the US State Department, India’s External Affairs Ministry has vehemently criticized it as “deeply biased.” The report, which highlighted various issues including violence in Manipur and the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, was met with strong disapproval from the Indian government.
The Ministry emphasized that the report fails to grasp the complexities of the Indian context and portrays a distorted view of the country. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “This report is deeply biased and reflects a poor understanding of India. We attach no value to it and urge you to do the same.”
The report drew attention to significant abuses in Manipur following ethnic conflict outbreaks in May 2023, along with instances of transnational repression such as the killing of Nijjar in Canada. It also noted the violence’s toll, with at least 175 casualties and over 60,000 displacements stemming from conflicts between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
Additionally, the report documented searches by the Income Tax department at the Delhi and Mumbai offices of the UK-based broadcaster, BBC, on allegations of tax irregularities.
India asserts its commitment to upholding human rights and calls for a fair and unbiased assessment of its internal affairs, urging stakeholders to disregard the aforementioned report.
