NIA Investigative Team Attacked in West Bengal’s East Midnapore
A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team faced an attack in Bhupatinagar, West Bengal’s East Midnapore district, as they arrived to investigate a blast case dating back to 2022 at the residence of a Trinamool Congress leader. The incident occurred around 5:30 am when initial reports suggested that bricks were hurled at the NIA team’s vehicle, resulting in damage to the windscreen. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
The investigation stems from an explosion on December 3, 2022, which destroyed a house in Bhupatinagar, claiming three lives. Last month, the NIA had summoned eight Trinamool Congress leaders for questioning regarding the blast.
The Trinamool Congress accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the NIA’s actions, alleging political motivations behind the probe. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh claimed that the BJP had provided a list of TMC leaders to the NIA, suggesting impending arrests.
This incident follows a similar attack two months ago, where Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials were assaulted during a raid on the residence of a suspended TMC leader linked to a ration distribution scam. The mob attempted to obstruct the ED officers, resulting in injuries to three officers who required hospitalization. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel accompanying the ED team intervened to control the situation, highlighting the escalating tensions in West Bengal’s political landscape.
