Supreme Court Bar Association Dissociates from Letter on Electoral Bonds Scheme
  • PublishedMarch 13, 2024

The executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has distanced itself from a letter penned by its chief, Adish C Aggarwala, requesting President Droupadi Murmu to seek a presidential reference on the electoral bonds scheme case. The SCBA condemned the contents of the letter, labeling it as an “attempt to overreach and undermine the authority” of the Supreme Court. Aggarwala’s letter expressed apprehensions about divulging the names of corporate donors to political parties, citing potential victimization and harassment. The SCBA executive committee asserted that it had not authorized the president to draft such a letter and disassociates from its contents. The committee views the act and the letter’s content as an effort to overreach the authority of the Supreme Court and unequivocally condemns it. Adish C Aggarwala serves as the chairperson of the All India Bar Association and wrote the letter on the letterhead of this association, though it bore his designation as the president of the SCBA. The SCBA’s decision to dissociate from the letter underscores the importance of maintaining the institution’s integrity and avoiding any perceived attempt to undermine the judiciary’s authority.
