The Ministry of Home Affairs is expected to notify the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) today. The CAA facilitates the acquisition of Indian citizenship for Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian, and Parsi refugees from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. The law aims to provide citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from these countries who arrived in India before December 31, 2014. Home Minister Amit Shah had recently stated that the implementation of CAA would take place before the Lok Sabha elections. The law faced protests across the country after its enactment in 2019. Amit Shah assured that the CAA would not revoke anyone’s citizenship and emphasized that it was a promise made by the Congress government. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared that her government would not allow the implementation of CAA or NRC (National Register of Citizens) in the state.
