External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar met with Akie Abe, the wife of the late former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, in Tokyo during his three-day visit to Japan. This meeting took place almost two years after the assassination of Shinzo Abe on July 8, 2022, during an election campaign speech. Jaishankar presented a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Akie Abe, expressing condolences for the death of Shinzo Abe’s mother.
Sharing images of the meeting on social media platform X, S Jaishankar stated, “Being my first visit to Tokyo after the demise of PM Shinzo Abe, met with his wife, Mrs. Akie Abe. Recalled PM Shinzo Abe’s invaluable contribution to the advancement of India-Japan relations.”
Shinzo Abe’s assassination in 2022 shocked Japan and the international community. The accused, Tetsuya Yamagami, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder, along with other crimes such as violating gun control laws. The perpetrator claimed to have killed Abe due to alleged connections to a religious group he detested.
During his visit to Japan, S Jaishankar also co-chaired the 16th India-Japan Foreign Ministers Strategic Dialogue in Tokyo with Japanese counterpart Yoko Kamikawa. They discussed various aspects of bilateral relations, including emerging technologies, and emphasized the need for their countries to respond to evolving geopolitical and geo-economic trends.
