Parrot Fever Outbreak: Respiratory Infection Caused by Bacterium Chlamydia Psittaci Claims Lives in Europe
  • PublishedMarch 8, 2024

Psittacosis, also known as parrot fever, a respiratory bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia psittaci, has led to five deaths across Europe this year. The infection, originating in birds, particularly parrots, pigeons, and poultry, can be transmitted to humans through the inhalation of particles from bird feathers or dry feces. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported deaths in Denmark and the Netherlands, with hospitalizations in Austria, Germany, and Sweden.

Symptoms of parrot fever in humans include pneumonia-like manifestations such as cough, difficulty breathing, chest pain, along with fever, muscle ache, headache, and gastrointestinal symptoms. While the bacteria causing psittacosis can be transmitted from birds to humans, the likelihood of further human-to-human transmission is low. Proper diagnosis enables effective treatment with antibiotics.

Dr. Neha Rastogi, Consultant in Infectious Diseases, emphasized that parrot fever is a rare but potentially serious bacterial infection affecting birds, and its transmission to humans occurs through inhalation of airborne particles contaminated with the bacteria. Dr. Saibal Chakravorty, Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine, noted that symptoms can include respiratory issues, fever, chills, muscle aches, headache, and gastrointestinal problems.

Preventive measures include practicing proper hygiene, such as thorough handwashing after handling birds and avoiding the inhalation of bird feather dust or droppings. Treatment involves antibiotics, particularly doxycycline or tetracycline, administered orally for two to three weeks, along with supportive care for symptom relief. Doctors recommend protective measures for those handling birds in work environments to prevent future infections.
