Tension Peaks in Manipur as Armed Miscreants Abduct Police Officer Amid Rising Community Unrest

In a significant escalation of tension in Manipur, armed cadres, allegedly affiliated with the Meitei organization Arambai Tenggol, abducted Imphal East additional superintendent of police, Amit Singh. The assailants, numbering around 200, reportedly attacked Singh’s residence, engaging in indiscriminate firing and vandalizing properties. The incident was a purported retaliation against Singh, who had earlier arrested six individuals associated with the Arambai Tenggol for their alleged involvement in vehicle theft.

Protests ensued following the arrests, led by Meira Paibis, a Meitei women’s group, demanding the release of the detained individuals. The situation intensified, resulting in the armed attack on Singh’s residence. The police officer and one of his escorts were abducted during the assault but were subsequently rescued in a swift operation by the Manipur Police.

Singh, who is part of the Manipur Police’s operations wing, is currently stable and receiving medical treatment. The incident underscores the intricate dynamics of inter-community relations in Manipur, where tensions between the Meiteis and tribal groups have been simmering since May 3, 2023. Over 180 casualties have been reported in the region, stemming from protests against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. The Manipur government has called in the Army and deployed Assam Rifles to address the escalating situation, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
