The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a warning to centrally-contracted players who prioritize the Indian Premier League (IPL) over domestic cricket. This comes after India captain Rohit Sharma emphasized the importance of hunger for Test cricket, expressing that opportunities will be given to those displaying the desired passion for the format.
The issue gained prominence as players like Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan showed reluctance to participate in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, focusing on IPL preparations instead. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had earlier issued a warning that players favoring league cricket over domestic competitions would face severe consequences.
Rohit Sharma’s post-match statement sparked discussions among state associations, with several supporting the sentiment but acknowledging the need for BCCI to establish a system preventing such situations. Abhilash Khandekar, president of Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, concurred with Rohit’s stance, highlighting the significance of Ranji Trophy as the backbone of Indian cricket.
Former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar emphasized the importance of playing Ranji Trophy to enhance skills, especially against spin on Indian wickets. He mentioned that no player is indispensable, and if someone chooses not to play Ranji, there are alternatives available in India.
In response to the situation, a state unit official proposed that India Test regulars should participate in Ranji Trophy matches, serving as motivation for younger players. Additionally, the official suggested that BCCI should grant state bodies the authority to ban players who neglect their domestic cricket commitments.
The discussions reflect a broader debate on the balance between T20 leagues and domestic cricket, with the BCCI attempting to reinforce the significance of the latter, particularly Ranji Trophy, as a crucial platform for player development.
