Ashok Chavan’s Shift from Congress to BJP: A Move of Disenchantment and Strategic Choice
  • PublishedFebruary 16, 2024

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s surprising decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and file his nomination for Rajya Sabha has sent shockwaves through the political landscape. In an interview with HT, the 65-year-old politician expressed his disillusionment with the Congress, stating that the party was “ill-prepared for elections,” and his continued association would be a “waste” of efforts.

Chavan highlighted the lack of preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections within the Congress, making it a strategic move to join the BJP and work at the national level. He praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, claiming that the opposition was imploding. When questioned about allegations of leaving due to pressure from central agencies and the Adarsh scam, Chavan dismissed them as lies and called for introspection within the Congress.

Responding to speculation about other Congress MLAs joining him, Chavan clarified that he hadn’t encouraged anyone to follow suit and had no plans to split the party. However, he acknowledged growing discontent among Congress MLAs, expressing concerns about their prospects in the next assembly elections.

In response to criticism from Ramesh Chennithala, the All India Congress Committee in charge of Maharashtra, Chavan defended his decision, stating that time was running out for the Congress to put up a fight against the BJP. He emphasized the need for the Congress to change and respond to the current situation in Maharashtra.

Chavan addressed the ideological shift from a party that claims to be secular to one championing Hindutva, acknowledging that he may not agree with everything but stressed the importance of understanding the BJP’s ideology. He denied seeking any post or position within the BJP and clarified that his move to national politics was a personal decision, not influenced by pressure from anyone.

Ashok Chavan’s move reflects a combination of disenchantment with the Congress’s electoral preparedness and a strategic choice to align with the BJP, citing the need for change and a focus on national-level contributions. His decision could have broader implications on the political dynamics in Maharashtra.
