US Senate Approves $95 Billion Wartime Aid Package for Ukraine and Allies
  • PublishedFebruary 14, 2024

The US Senate has finally approved a $95 billion wartime aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and other American allies, after facing weeks of setbacks and delays. The Senate passed the measure 70 to 29 in a pre-dawn vote, with strong bipartisan support, clearing the 60-vote threshold required for passage. The aid package allocates $60 billion for Ukraine, primarily aimed at supporting its military operations against Russian forces. Another $14 billion is designated for Israel and US military operations in the region, while over $8 billion is earmarked for US partners in the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan, to counter aggression from China. Additionally, nearly $10 billion is set aside for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza.

The fate of the aid package is uncertain as it now heads to the Republican-controlled House. House Speaker Mike Johnson has expressed dissatisfaction with the bill, citing the absence of border enforcement provisions, a key concern for some Republicans. The House’s stance on the package remains unclear, introducing uncertainty into the comprehensive aid proposal. Despite its passage in the Senate, divisions within the GOP and broader political considerations may influence the fate of the aid package in the House, creating challenges in delivering critical support to Ukraine and other allies.
