Anticipated Rainfall Brings Relief to Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh After Dry January

Anticipated Rainfall Brings Relief to Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh After Dry January
  • PublishedFebruary 1, 2024

In a much-awaited reprieve, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a spell of light to moderate rain for Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh this week. Following an unusually dry and cold January, the region is set to experience precipitation, thanks to two consecutive western disturbances expected to impact northwest India between January 30 and February 3.

According to the Monday evening bulletin from IMD Chandigarh, the anticipated rainfall is likely to occur from Tuesday through Thursday and into the weekend, offering respite from the prevailing weather conditions. Certain areas in Punjab may also witness thunderstorms during this period.

Since January 26, there has been an observable improvement in the weather, and the bulletin predicts a gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-4 degrees Celsius over the next four to five days in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh.

On Tuesday morning, SBS Nagar in Punjab recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 4.0 degrees Celsius, while Ludhiana registered the highest minimum temperature at 9.7 degrees Celsius. The bulletin highlights that the weather shift is contributing to this warming trend.

Notably, December 2023 saw a significant rainfall deficit in Punjab and Haryana, with 70% and 54% less precipitation than normal, respectively. However, Chandigarh bucked the trend, receiving 108% more rainfall than the expected 15.6 mm.

As the region eagerly awaits the much-needed rain, the IMD advises residents to stay updated on weather alerts and anticipates a positive impact on the overall climate and agricultural landscape.
