In a recent statement, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu reiterated the strong and respectful ties between the Maldives and China, highlighting mutual respect and China’s unwavering support for the Indian Ocean island’s sovereignty. President Muizzu, who returned from a state visit to China, emphasized the historical assistance provided by China to the Maldives since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972.

During the visit, both nations elevated their ties to a strategic partnership, with President Muizzu expressing admiration for China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which he believes has taken bilateral relations to new heights. The President assured that China, as a policy, does not interfere in the internal affairs of the Maldives, contributing to the strength of their relationship.

In light of recent developments in bilateral ties with India, President Muizzu underscored the importance of maintaining an independent and sovereign stance. He called for a reduction in dependency on any single country and announced plans to secure imports of essential commodities from diverse sources.

President Muizzu’s commitment to strengthening the Maldivian economy and fostering cooperation with developed nations aligns with his vision for the country’s progress. Despite recent tensions, the President expressed optimism that China-Maldives relations will continue to grow stronger in the future.

The Maldives, as an independent and sovereign state, reaffirms its commitment to non-interference and upholds the belief that no country, regardless of its size, has the right to exert influence over the domestic affairs of another sovereign nation.
