Urgent Fuel Shortage Crisis in Maharashtra Sparks Public Concern

Urgent Fuel Shortage Crisis in Maharashtra Sparks Public Concern
  • PublishedJanuary 2, 2024

Maharashtra is currently grappling with an acute fuel shortage, precipitated by ongoing protests across the state, particularly among truck drivers, against the recently introduced hit-and-run law. The protests have triggered panic-buying among motorists, leading to extensive queues outside petrol pumps in various cities including Nagpur, Thane, Jalgaon, and Dhulia.

Reports indicate that several petrol pumps in Nagpur district have already depleted their stock, with managers warning of potential closures and the possibility of displaying “No Petrol” signs if the situation persists. The Nashik District Petrol Dealers Association has issued a dire warning, stating that without a cessation of the ongoing agitation, numerous fuel stations in Nashik district will inevitably run dry.

Fuel supply to 150 petrol pumps in Mumbai was recently replenished, but excessive panic-buying has disrupted the equilibrium, intensifying concerns about future supplies. Representatives from Mumbai’s Petrol Pump Association and Marathwada’s petrol pump dealers have cautioned that if normalcy isn’t restored promptly, imminent fuel scarcity looms large, potentially affecting districts by as early as Tuesday.

Tragically, these protests have resulted in violent altercations, including instances where police personnel were injured due to blockades and attacks, leading to clashes requiring forceful dispersal.

This escalating crisis necessitates urgent attention and resolution to prevent further disruptions to public life and ensure a consistent fuel supply across the state.
