Nearly 100 Opposition MPs Suspended Amidst Demands for Parliament Security Statement

Amid escalating tensions, both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha saw the suspension of over 90 Opposition MPs during the winter session. The demand for a statement regarding the Parliament security breach resulted in the suspensions. Speaker Om Birla suspended 33 MPs in Lok Sabha, while Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar suspended 45 MPs in Rajya Sabha for the session’s remainder.

The suspended members included prominent figures like Adhir Ranjan Choudhury, Jairam Ramesh, and TR Baalu, among others. This move follows the previous suspension of 13 Lok Sabha MPs and Derek O’Brien from Rajya Sabha.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi appealed to the Opposition to abstain from using placards, emphasizing the need for dignified discourse. However, persistent disruptions led to the suspensions. Opposition members sought Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on security measures.

This unprecedented suspension, reminiscent of 1989, sparks intense debate over parliamentary decorum and the demand for crucial government responses.
